Look lost and/ or making friends in the street

The working holiday travelers that appear to have a gift for making friends are incredible to behold, but making new friends in social situations and in the street is pretty simple to do.

Hours of fun, new friendships, invitation to meet again or better are in easy reach using a couple of these ways.

- Look lost in a city centre square, park, at the beach of anywhere. Even better have a map unfolded, turn it upside down, point and make a face. Someone will come and help, or better still, show you the way, or take you with them instead

- While waiting for transport or in a coffee shop, comment or ask about the clothes, hair style, shoes, tattoo, piercings of the person next to you. Often they will be grateful for the attention, as this is normal human nature. You may then be asked to join their table, with more to come.

- Sit with open body language, wear a smile and make eye contact - you might be surprised. Australia is a warm, free, easy and friendly country. Australians are typically accepted no matter your race, colour age or sex. There are few class distinctions and few reasons to expect anything else than a friendly response.

- For guys it is typical to give a tiny nod of acknowledgment after making eye contact with another man. A nod returned, becomes a "G'day" exchanged. This can then be followed by a genuine "What are you doing today?" At least friendly banter will follow, staggering from the pub at closing time with a new best friend is a distinct possibility.
