Ask departing backpackers for transport cards

Working holiday backpackers that are leaving Australia to return home or  going to another country can be the source of lots of cheap and free stuff.

One specific thing to be on the lookout for are charge cards for the Australian capital city transportation systems.  If you're staying in a hostel upon arrival in Australia or spending time with other backpackers, be sure to find out their intentions.  People departing the country should be promptly asked about anything they will not be needing now they are leaving.  It might cost you a beer to purchase them, but you are likely to get one or more city transport cards. Each of these will probably have a stored balance. It will be a little bit of a lottery, but you are likely to come out in front AND not have to find a vendor for the cards upon arrival in the city.   This smart move will put you through steps in front.
