Shop at the end of the day

As with most supermarkets in organised countries, Australia has laws and business systems that encourage and force supermarkets, bakeries and other food outlets to throw out food that has been on display for too long or approaches its used by date.

Approaching closing time it is frequent that prices will be discounted on food items that would otherwise have to be thrown in the bin.

This includes :
Baked items
Cooked chickens
Fast foods, chinese and salads presented in hot or cold serveries

Items in the dairy, chicken and other meats after often discounted, sometimes just for a little discolouration from light exposure.

With most supermarkets closing at 9pm, this makes 8.30pm a perfect time to shop, particularly if would like a BBQ chicken for dinner.

The fruit and vegetable section is another place to spend some time later in the day and check for hand written discount labels.

Extra Tip: Be sure that the discounted price is charged at the checkout. Sleepy staff may scan discounted items at the original price.
