Outboard motor fuel blockages

Sun 09 Dec 2012
Why is always the fuel? So many times early in my boating career I would chase engine problems through spark plug changes and electric checks and then one day someone told me "Its always the fuel".

How true that has proven to be.

Apart from a stator problem with my Yamaha 9.9 hp 4 strokes, fuel has proven itself to always be the problem.

Years ago a long wet summer with the dinghy left out had a lot of water work its way into the fuel system and create problems. Since then I have used a Ryco water separating filter sika'd to the transom to ensure that the fuel reaching the outboard was spot on.... Voila! years of trouble free service from the Mariner 15!

This has been great until recently when the engine would stop 5 mins after starting. The other thing was the fuel prime bulb in the fuel line looked like it was stuffed as it would not re-inflate after a pump... or there was stuff clogging the pick up in the tank. No no no. It was the fuel line from the tank to the bulb!

I removed it and found I could not blow through it!! Goodness knows how the fuel was getting through!

So the line is now replaced and the bulb and the filter - so it should be some years before the tender has any problems again!
