Brisbane to Sydney road trip itinerary

Wed 18 Sep 2013

Here are my favourite places to stop on the NSW coast between Brisbane and Sydney, going that direction. There is plenty of quiet places and some great friends. If you are a friend of mine, I can connect you with my friends.

Byron Bay
Stand at the most easterly point of Australia at this famous land mark. It makes a perfect photo op and watch out for dolphins in the waters below. Nearby Byron Bay township is full of hippies, surfies and backpackers relaxing their way through the day. Lots of surfing lessons available (2237)

Kim's Place
My friend Kim lives on the hill overlooking Wardell. If you are lucky enough to have connections like her, then you get to stay in a huge Tuscan house with swimming pool, tennis court and tropical rainforest waterfall feature. (2238)

Woody Head Campground, Iluka
This is a fully manned and professionally run National Park camp ground right on the coast just north of Iluka. Typically plenty of space and a very nice beach to enjoy. (2239)

Pacific Hotel, Yamba
Renown Pacific Hotel at Yamba is positioned high on the hill overlooking the river mouth at Yamba. The outlook is perfect to watch over the ocean waves with a beer in hand. (2240)

Yuraygir Campground, Broooms Head
Great little campground slightly spoiling at the moment with pressure to book online before turning up. Even still, turn up and park the camper late in the day. Bring some firewood to light up in the evening. Plenty of kangaroos around. (2241)

Coffs Harbour
Coffs harbour inner beach is a great safe place to stop for a swim or catch a beginner's wave. Plenty of food, showers and friendly people about. The old jetty typically has young locals jumping off. (2242)

Promise Land Road
Heading in land to pretty Belligen, you cross the river and up to Promise Land Road for the ultimate scenic loop road in NSW. The road wanders past farm house, happy cows, look outs to the hillside and crosses a picturesque creek a number of times. Stop for a cool swim at the old timber bridge. (2243)

Coco's Place, Gundagen
Coco is a great Couchsurfing guy I met randomly a couple of years ago while camping near his house at Congo on the NSW south coast. He is currently living in a hippie community at Gundagen. There is a bunch of really cool people, and Coco's simple attitude to live is made around surfing, fishing, sailing and any other watersports. He appreciates nature and is super cool. (2244)

Valla Beach
Valla Beach is a tiny community close to Nambucca Heads, NSW. There are some houses, a pub, a few shops, caravan park and not much else. The market placed is the car park at the beach itself. Here you can back the camper up to the wooden fence, kick the tailgate open and look out at the surf and surfers. There is a cold shower and toilets. Ranger activity is limited. (2245)

Chris' CS Place, Port Macquarie
No van / couch surfing trip along the coast is complete without a stop in at Chris' place. He has an open door policy and every night sees 2 - 20 CS guests staying in his house. He is warm and very welcoming, so its very easy to feel at home. (2246)

Crowdy Head Surfing
Crowdy head is a personal favourite place to hang out for a trainee surf. There is regularly a small clean wave, and not a lot of people. There is also a surf club beside an open grassed parking area and a single tree. On the right days you can great a great meal from the surf club servery right on the beach front. There are toilets and cold showers. Its a distance from the highway, so there are not a lot of tourists or people making a fuss. (2247)

Neranie campground and picnic area, Myall lakes
On the road to Seal Rocks is one of nicest, most serine camp sites I have ever experienced. Camp under giant gums and swim in semi-fresh waters that rarely change levels in this near-to-the-sea lake. Stepping off the grass into the water your feet are greeted with sand and you gradually wade out to chest deep so you can turn and look back at the beatiful camping scene.
