Phi Phi Don
Paired with the uninhabited Phi Phi Lei, is the "Don" or large island. Famous, apparently, the world around, Phi Phi Don did really badly in the Tsunami, with hundreds of lives lost. The result of the devastation has been substantial urban renewal. With all the current islands guests out on day tours, we arrived mid morning to scene of relative peace and quiet, with the ability to walk the streets in comfort. This lasted little more than an hour, with the arrival of the day trippers from Phuket proper, keen to loose themselves in the small island village lane ways. Similarly, we meandered for some groceries, where keen shop keepers beaconed our purchases. Fruit and veg for several AU $, and a new purging snorkel for seven, dinner was done with large serves and beers for $40 for three of us… in the back street.
Otherwise the beach front tourist village was busying itself with the day trade, copied music CD's and DVDs, classic Thai trinkets, and woven bags. Enquiring for some authentic Thai music at one of the pirate music stores, I was turned away. Bob Dylan and Robbie Williams no problems. "There, Buddah Bar" announced Betty. It took a moment to explain the famous chill music brand to Betty was not local authentic sounds….
With lunch on board, and $5 per hour worth of internet, it was time for the afternoon sailed to Racha, and rendezvous with Charlie and Betty's fellow Asia cruising buddies just in time for sunset.
